Product Description The top-selling auto repair guide--400,000 copies sold--now extensively reorganized and updated Forty-eight percent of U.S. households perform at least some automobile maintenance on their own, with women now accounting for one third of this $34 billion automotive do-it-yourself market. For new or would-be do-it-yourself mechanics, this illustrated how-to guide has long been a must and now it's even better. A complete reorganization now puts relevant repair and maintenance information directly after each automotive system overview, making it much easier to find hands-on fix-it instructions. Author Deanna Sclar has updated systems and repair information throughout, eliminating discussions of carburetors and adding coverage of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. She's also revised schedules for tune-ups and oil changes, included driving tips that can save on maintenance and repair costs, and added new advice on troubleshooting problems and determining when to call in a professional mechanic. For anyone who wants to save money on car repairs and maintenance, this book is the place to start. Deanna Sclar (Long Beach, CA), an acclaimed auto repair expert and consumer advocate, has contributed to the Los Angeles Times and has been interviewed on the Today show, NBC Nightly News, and other television programs.

great for beginner-------start here. then..... August 29, 2010 Lan Huang (New York) for a more thorough treatment of the subject, I recommend you purchase "Automotive Technology" textbook, u can get them very cheap ( a previous edition .)
Jack ErJavec's text is pretty excellent and about 1,000 pages
A brilliant introduction to automobiles July 16, 2010 The Scoot (Portland, OR) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book should be required reading for anyone purchasing a car. If you couple "Auto Repair for Dummies" with your car's owner's maunual then you really can't go wrong. Part One of Auto Repair for Dummies is entitled "Getting to know your vehicle." I know of no author in the world can introduce automobiles to people as well as Deanna Sclar.
In the 1980's I bought the first edition of this book. Though certainly no master mechanic, thanks to Deanna Sclar I've been able to safely maintain my vehicles over the years.
Auto Repair for Dummies demystifies auto mechanics and makes it accessible to the average car owner.
For old dummies June 4, 2010 Napoleon Urcuyo Ramos (San pedro Sula, Honduras) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Despite the fact it is too basic (you can say: it is for dummies ,Ok?), it is too old, I mean it is out of date. For instance, my car is 2003, and most of the book content is related to cars with older technology. It covers autos with features of the 80s or 90s. If you have a car of this century ( 2000 and later), you need to look in another direction.
I am disappointed, I expected more, and I got less.
This Stays in the Car! March 18, 2010 F. Herl (Tennessee) My daughter just got her first car and while she knows a little about the car, the general knowledge provided in this book is great! It is easy to understand and will help her explain a problem to a mechanic that will be useful to the mechanic. This book is in the pouch behind the driver's seat. Now I don't think it will help her shop for discount auto accessories or install rebuilt cylinder heads but for changing the oil, checking tire pressure, etc. and general maintenance, it sure beats the manual that is provided by the manufacturer.
AWESOME BOOK! October 29, 2009 M. Ortuno (UT) This book is a must have because of all of the helpful information of how to maintain your car! This book teaches you many things from the basics to the more challenging maintenance. This book helps anyone with repairing cars or maintaining them.
